Should you choose a dress to suit your body type?

"You’ve styled so many brides over the years. Surely you can just look at me and know exactly what shape of dress will suit my body?”

And on paper, that makes perfect sense. With decades of experience and hundreds of women styled, surely there’s a formula, a framework, a shortcut?!

Well, no. And that’s exactly what makes the Rachel Scott Couture experience so different.

When you walk through our doors for the first time, we won’t immediately tell you which shape, fabric or silhouette is ‘perfect’ for you, because we don’t know the most important part yet.

We don’t know you.

Body shape isn’t the whole story.

You are not just a set of measurements.

You’re a multi-faceted, complex, brilliant woman with her own sense of style, her own insecurities, her own personality and presence. That matters far more than whether a-line is “meant to” suit a pear shape or if ballgowns are “off-limits” for petite brides.

Your dress should reflect your whole self, not just your proportions.

And yes, we’re experts in shape, silhouette, cut and design. We know what will flatter, what can be adapted, what will move beautifully in a photograph or hold its structure perfectly down the aisle. But none of that knowledge matters if we don’t understand how you want to feel.

A wedding dress isn’t about hiding or emphasising, it’s about becoming. About stepping into the truest, most confident version of yourself.

Let’s talk examples.

If you’re hourglass shaped, the classic guides might steer you away from fishtail dresses. "They’ll emphasise your hips!" they say, as though that’s a problem. But maybe you love your hips. Maybe you want that va-va-voom energy, that red carpet silhouette, that Jessica Rabbit confidence. If you walk in with sass and presence, a fishtail could be the most you thing you ever wear.

On the flip side? You might have that same hourglass figure but the thought of all eyes on your curves brings you out in a cold sweat. That same fishtail could feel exposing, uncomfortable, wrong. And we would never push you into it, because your comfort and confidence come first.

Same shape. Same dress. Two completely different experiences. And that’s the whole point.

Petite bride? Big personality?

Another classic rule: “Petite brides shouldn’t wear ballgowns.” But why not? If your dream wedding moment includes a dramatic swirl of fabric, that Cinderella feeling, and a jaw-dropping entrance, then let’s do it. Your dress isn’t about your height, it’s about your vision.

Remember, it’s not just about what looks good, it’s about what feels right.

Personality over prescription.

What if you’ve always been the laidback, free-spirited type? You’re getting married in a field, there’s a guitar player at the ceremony, you’ve never worn heels in your life and you feel most at home in loose silhouettes and bare feet.

Do we reach for a structured corseted dress just because it technically suits your body type?

Absolutely not.

We reach for something that feels like you.

The Rachel Scott Couture difference.

Here, it’s never about fitting in.

It’s about standing out, as your most authentic, beautiful self.

We take the time to get to know you, your personality, your wedding, your lifestyle, even the bits of your body you’re unsure about (we all have them!). And then, we guide you through the endless bespoke options with kindness, honesty, and skill.

We’ll make suggestions. We’ll tweak, adjust, engineer. We’ll change a neckline, soften a sleeve, rework a fabric. You don’t need to arrive with answers, you just need to be open to the process.

This is a conversation. A collaboration. A creative, thoughtful exploration of what feels good on you, and only you.

What really makes you look incredible?

Confidence. Joy. That spine-tingling moment where you look in the mirror and don’t want to take it off. The feeling of standing taller, smiling wider, catching your reflection and thinking, “Yes. That’s me.”

We believe that when a woman is truly comfortable, truly herself, everyone can see it. It’s in your posture, your energy, your face. And no amount of ‘perfect proportions’ can replicate that.

Final thoughts?

Forget what the rule books say.

Forget what your aunt read in a magazine or what a TikTok told you is “best for your frame.”

Ask yourself:

  • Do I feel like me?
  • Do I feel amazing in this?
  • Do I feel like I could conquer the world, and love every minute of it?

If the answer is yes, then that is your dress.

Whether it’s slinky and black, bold and structured, soft and floaty, or covered in green sequins, if you feel incredible, it is incredible.

And if it’s not quite there yet? Don’t worry. That’s what we’re here for. We’ll keep shaping, refining, and adjusting until it’s exactly right.

Your dress. Your way. No rules. No compromises. Just confidence, craftsmanship and joy.
